What you will learn

This course is designed for those with little or no experience in fashion who would like to learn about the fashion design process. You will learn the basics of fashion drawing, pattern cutting, hand and machine sewing, and fabric types and uses. The beginning of the course will concentrate on learning basic fashion techniques. By the end of the course, you will create a garment from your own design. On completion of this course you will receive an OCNLR Entry Level 3 Extended Award.

By the end of this course, you will be able to:

  • Be able to follow health, safety and hygiene guidelines at all times.
  • Be aware of planning and organisational skills.
  • Understand the difference between craft equipment and materials.
  • Understand design elements.
  • Be able to produce an art or craft piece of work.
  • Be able to explain your work to others.

Class format and activities

Classes for this course are delivered in person at our Waterloo Centre. Class format includes demonstration, group and pair work, and individual tasks. Formal and informal discussion will ensure that you make the best possible progress on your course, and you will have regular feedback from your tutor in a constructive and supportive environment.

Entry requirements

None – Beginners welcome no previous knowledge of fashion is required.

What you need to know before you enrol

Excellent attendance and punctuality are required from all students, you need to be able to all the sessions to get the most out of this course.

What you need

The college will provide pattern paper, card, calico, and a sketchbook for your projects. Tools and equipment needed for sewing and pattern cutting will be available for use during your lessons. You will need to purchase basic drawing materials; your tutor will provide you with a list in the first session. You may wish to purchase your own fabric for your final project.
