It’s Women’s History Month, and at 少女福利 London we are very proud to share with you some of the many fascinating stories of women 鈥� past and present 鈥� who have shaped the legacy of Morley as being a place of innovation, learning and inspiration for all.
With a breadth of activity which will be promoted throughout the month to celebrate this theme…such as Morley Radio podcasts, historic profiles of inspirational women at Morley, and the historically renowned Penny Lectures…you’ll be able to feel the spirit of Women’s History Month at Morley.
“Women Pioneers of Morley”
Our Women’s History Month brochure, now available at all centres, will give you an insight into the importance of this celebration, where women with strong links to Morley have pursued something creative and meaningful.
From the first few pages, you will see the legacy of Women at Morley: from our Founder Emma Cons, to contemporary staff and student profiles.
This contrast between historical female figures with modern day female success stories at Morley is at the heart of this campaign, showing a spirit that is still very much alive today.

Penny Lecture: The Maltreatment of the child Jane in Charlotte Bront毛鈥檚 Jane Eyre and Modern Standards of Child Safeguarding

Socially forward looking elements in Charlotte Bront毛鈥檚 Jane Eyre frequently focus on the adult Jane鈥檚 strong sense of self as a Victorian woman, her conviction of her equality with men and within the social class system. Even as a child, Jane鈥檚 sense of self and independence is highly developed. Bront毛 depicts the child Jane鈥檚 responses to the systematic maltreatment of a child within the home to highlight the psychological and intellectual complexity of the child.

Poetry Happening: Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries
Date: 1st 鈥� 31st March 2024 across the Chelsea Centre for Creative Industries.
As part of Women鈥檚 History Month, staff and students at the Chelsea Centre will be creating a month long 鈥淧oetry Happening鈥� – an audio-visual installation of chosen poems that, to us, signify aspects of women鈥檚 experiences across diverse cultures and historical periods. These will be displayed around the Chelsea Centre and changed on a weekly basis each Friday. The event will include a participatory element.
Exhibitions
In each of the three mid-term exhibitions in March, our students will be curating a section dedicated to women鈥檚 creativity. The exhibits will be on view during the following exhibitions:

- Puppets: UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma Creative Practice students: 11 鈥� 15 March 2024
- Interim show: UAL Level 4 Foundation Diploma in Art & Design and Fashion students: 21 鈥� 28 March 2024
- Penny Lectures: A lecture by explorer Elise Wortley, aka Woman with Altitude, on Wednesday 13th March at 2pm and by architect Emily Rissom of R2 Studio Architects on the 27th March at 2pm. (Students only.)
